Lipitor is the number one prescription drug used worldwide to lower cholesterol. It is considered a statin drug. Statins are known as HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors which reduce the amount of cholesterol made by the liver. By blocking the HMG-CoaA, an enzyme which is used to make cholesterol, statins reduce the production of low-density lipoprotein (LDL). It is the LDL that is to blame for the build up in the arteries.

Liver function tests must be checked on a regular basis to detect any possible liver damage.
