Medieval Education Picture
At the time that Lincoln Cathedral was built, Lincoln was already a substantial medieval town, with a castle. Remigius, founder of the cathedral, was a Benedictine monk and a supporter of William the Conqueror. As a reward for his support of the Norman monarch, he was granted the largest diocese in England, which stretched from the Humber to the Thames.
The Foundation of Lincoln Cathedral
King William decreed that the seat of Remigius’ diocese should move from Dorchester to Lincoln, which was a town loyal to the crown with an easily defendable castle. The cathedral was built of Lincolnshire limestone, and was located close to the castle for security purposes. Remigius died in May 1092, just two days before the cathedral was consecrated.
