Ontario Ministry Of Education And Training

On May 9, 2011, the Ontario Provincial Police announced an education and enforcement blitz against distracted driving. According to the OPP, distracted driving is similar to impaired driving and the police force questions whether the public would report a driver who is talking on a cellphone as they would someone who appears to be drunk at the wheel.

Chief Superintendent Bill Grodzinski, Commander of the OPP Highway Safety Division, said "People need to understand the level of risk they are dealing with; distracted driving kills! We know it is seriously under-reported in our statistics and is a major cause of collisions in Ontario."

The education campaign will be conducted in schools and through the media. OPP officers, personnel from other law enforcement agencies and officials from the Ministry of Transport will take part in the blitz. Drivers will be warned about the dangers of driving while engaging in a secondary activity.
