Slant Back Procedure

Macerator pumps can run into problems. If, during maceration, the traveler hears the tone of the macerator pump alter as the motor slows down and speeds up, this may be an indication of a blockage. He could try stopping and starting the macerator momentarily to see if the motion will unblock it, but if not, intervention is required.

Prevention is Better Than Cure When Maintaining Macerator Pumps

Since macerator intervention is one of the darker aspects of RVing, prevention is generally the best cure. The traveler should practice good black tank hygiene by always using chemicals with digesting enzymes and by ensuring that foreign bodies like rubber bands do not accidentally make it into the tank. These two practices alone may be enough to avoid having to disassemble or clean out the macerator pump.

If, however, the blockage cannot be dislodged, then the ugly process begins. It is helpful at this stage to close the black valve and flush some gray water through to make the process marginally less unpleasant.
