Winter is a challenging season for many reasons - the snow that must be shoveled, patio furniture that you have to cover up, and, most difficult, the increased prevalence of the cold and the flu. While you cannot decrease the instance of snow or ice, the solution to the increased risk of falling ill due to the flu or another viral infection is to "strengthen immune system" - as in your immune system.
How to strengthen your immune system: The first line of defense against viral infections, like the flu or common cold, is to adopt a healthy lifestyle. Generally, this includes several common sense measures, such as maintaining a healthy body weight, eating whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables, washing your hands regularly with hot water and anti bacterial soap, sleeping at least eight hours a night, and minimizing alcohol consumption.
Proper nutrition
Some of the nutrients that you should be looking to include in your diet, to strengthen your immune system include vitamin C: It was eating oranges that warded off scurvy for Captain Cook and his men, and this vitamin C packed fruit, and its juice, are a key part of keeping your immune system in tip top shape. Your body will only absorb the vitamin C that it needs for the day, and then flush out the excess, so it is important to drink a glass of orange juice, or eat an orange, every day to maintain optimal levels.
